My Sunshine Coast - Part 1

When I saw Tourism QLD’s campaign asking for bloggers to talk about how they wouldboost their Vitamin Me levels with a trip to QLD, it made me think about about how lucky I am to be be spoiled by my little region of Qld every single day.

Although QLD and the Sunshine Coast have SO many places you could easily replenishyour ‘Vitamin Me’ levels, I’m going to stick to my little pocket of the woodsand tell you about 3 suburbs I spend 99% of my time going between. It’s my own local piece of paradise which I am lucky enough to enjoy every single day and I'm more than happy to share with you exactly how I enjoy it.

If your ever in my neighborhood, this is what you might find me doing...

Starting from the top (north), let me tell you about Cotton Tree...

Not only does the name sound like something out of a fairytale, Cotton Tree would have to be one of the most beautiful and relaxed places on the Sunshine Coast.

Situated on the corner of the beautiful Maroochy River and Maroochydore Beach, Cotton Treeisn’t as well known as it's famous Noosa and Mooloolaba neighbours, but is definitely one of theSunshine Coasts must visit destinations.

Last September we actually booked into the Cotton Tree Caravan Park for 2 weeks (which is actually only15 minutes from where we live in Buddina) however we wanted to immerse ourselves intothe laid back Cotton Tree lifestyle for some relaxation and a change of scenery.

My Cotton Tree recommendations...
❤ Shopping – Alterior Motiff - Stocking labels such as Lover, Maurie & Eve, Bec & Bridge, Lilya and plenty more, you certainly won't need to deny yourself of any retail therapy while visiting Cotton Tree.
❤ Art – Artist and blogger Mandy Shadforth (Oracle Fox) has a studio here.

❤ Cotton Tree Markets – You’ll find jewelery designer – Johsi of cool baby cool here every market day along with an assortment of stalls selling clothing, crafty nick knacks and fresh produce.
❤ Cafes – My favourite places to eat are Envy, Raw Energy, The Silver Spoon and The Beach Street Deli.
❤ Restaurants - For Thai I love Phon's Thai, Spanish Food Ba Vigo, and for a night out that's a bit special, Ebb Waterfront Fine Dining and Wine Cellar on Duporth Avenue is divine.
❤ Excercise - (other than anything and everything outdoors) There are heated pools at Cotton Tree Aquatic Centre situated right next to the river.

Mooloolaba

Mooloolaba's stunning north facing beach curves around the Esplanade and its grassy parkland. While you can simply relax and swim at the beach (which we mostly do) you can also enjoy the huge assortment of restaurants, cafes andboutique shopping.

After we spend a few hours swimming and soaking up the sun, find a spot the grass and relax into the night. We bring our own picnic blanket, candles and cutlery, order take away Thaior Pizza, and unwind after a fantastic day.

Views from my morning walk

This is where I live and it’s one of thebest kept secrets on the Sunshine Coast. There isn’t a lot of holidayaccommodation here as it’s mainly a residential area. Sneakily tucked away off theSunshine Coast Motorway and behind Kawana Shopping Centre, if your not a local or familiar with the area you would have noidea it’s there.

The beach side of Buddina and the Point Cartwright Peninsular has the Mooloolah river on oneside and beach on the other. My daily exercise routine consists of walkingalong the beach side, up and over the Point Cartwright Headland and then downalong the river. I’ve been doing this for years and the views right along the way still take my breath away.

Other than swimming and surfing on the beach side of Point Cartwright, we lovespending lazy afternoons in the park along side the river. We take our picnicblanket, pillows, cheese platter, wine, a good book and relax while watchingthe sun go down. It's pure heaven. If we feel like a coffee or meal out, our local cafe is One On LaBalsa. With amazing food, coffee and the friendliest staff, it's the perfect place to have breaky after a morning surf, or enjoy a lazy lunch looking over the river. Sometimes when I go for my walk in the morning I'll sneak in a coffee at One On LaBalsa on the way.

So that’s how I boost my Vitamin Me levels by living in QLD. There are so many more fabulous places to visit on the Sunshine Coast which I can't wait to share with you so stay tuned!

Another day, another style crush, this time it’s Caroline Issa, the executive fashion director of Tank magazine and editor-in-chief of Because Magazine.

Not only is she incredibly stunning, her style is impeccable. Elegant and perfectly polished yet simple and never over the top, she’s glamorous in an understated and organic way.Her simple black pulled back hair and vibrant red lips just top it all off to complete her unique style. Just when we were getting used to bright, contrasting colour blocking and the mixing and matching of prints, the fashion world goes and shakes it all up again and throws another new trend at us all...

I've been watching this particular look creep in over the past few weeks and I must say, I REALLY do like it. Outfits are now being put together in variations of one colour, creating a soft, romantic and fresh new look.

Although the trend was seen on recent international runways (Chloe, Givenchy and Kenzo), plus a few magazines, in my opinion it's the bloggers above (and Jess Hart) who've translated it best so far.

So folks, it looks like it's time to play with tone-on-tone colours for winter. Simply pick your favourite colour and start shading!

Leopard print pants

I’ll wear leopard-print in just aboutanything so I’m absolutely loving these 3 completely different styles of leopard print pants and how each celeb has styled them.

Kate Moss never fails to throw together a perfect combo. Pairing her leopardskinnies with biker boots and a classic black jacket, it has the perfect toughgirl edge yet so stylishly polished - a look Kate is a absolute master at achieving.

Blogger Sabrina from afterDRK goes with hertrademark casual style, mixing her leopard print pants with a cozy looking knittedjumper and polished off with a pair of killer heels. Her simple and perfectly balanced combinationshave me completely obsessed right now!

Hilary Rhoda opts for a similar style heel as Sabrina and black upperhalf as Kate yet finishes her look off with a scarf to tone in with the pants. I’mundecided on whether I think the scarf might be too much?

Sabrina has my vote for the best overall look. She has that knackfor creating super stylish outfits that always look socompletely comfortable and wearable. LOVE!

From fine dining, to trendy bars, rooftop swimming pools and five star spas – Right now I'm dreaming of a short little escape to Singapore...

I’m always on the search for amazing holiday destinations and after a little researching have recently discovered that Singapore could be a place that ticks all my current holiday requirements… From pampering and shopping to sipping cocktails by the pool, I've even been putthing together a fantasy wish list of what I'd pack for a Singapore weekend get-away.

First stop in Singapore for me right now would be to relax and unwind. Although I haven't travelled to Singapore myself so these are just suggestions from research, here are some ideas...

Retail Therapy!

For the big budget experience - Orchard Road apparently has an endless array of designers at your disposal from Louis Vuitton and Prada to Topshop and Sephora.
There are also plenty of more unique shopping hotspots that are a little more off the beaten track. Haji Lane in the Arab Quarter has beautiful fabrics and cute knick knacks, or Chinatown for its chic boutiques. The ideal finish to the day - Cocktails

Apparently there is no shortage of options with elegant bars, rooftop hideaways and sophisticated drinking spots all over the city. For a beachside cocktail experience with a twist, there is Singapore's premier sun-kissed playground - Tanjong Beach Club. This apparently has a stunning combination of restaurant, bar and beach getaway and often regarded as Singapore’s best stretch of sand www.tanjongbeachclub.com.

For the ultimate in cocktail indulgence, Klee is apparently the go. An intimate setting for only 30 people, the bar serves only the best in mixed spirits. Housed in what used to be a caretaker’s lodge, the venue boasts a baby grand piano to really set the mood and help you unwind after a long day.

I'm loving all of these cute all-in-one denim looks, each completely different from the other but all so relaxed and fun looking. The denim overall trend seems to come and go, making a big appearance every decade or so. For dedicated overall devotees like Alexa Chung however, they'll always have a variety of styles on rotation. New Year New Hair

It's a little shorter than anticipated but none the less I'm actually feeling pretty good about getting all my hair chopped off today! After having really long hair for over 10 years now it was actually extremely nerve racking to have most of it chopped away in a few swift slices!

I've been looking at photos of celebrities like Lara Bingle, Jessica Alba and Jennifer Aniston with their "BOB's' & "LOB's" for over a year now, fantasising about taking the plunge, but didn't think I could really do it. If your anything like me you would be finding hard to refrain from buying a few little treats for yourself right now with so many pre-christmas sales everywhere! I was Christmas shopping on Sunday and determined to not look at anything for myself, focus on finishing my Christmas pressie list only however I couldn't resist this cute block colour tshirt from Cotton On for $10. I really love how this tshirt combines the natural tan, bold navy and bright pink. 3 colours I would never think to combine together as separate items in an outfit yet they actually look so good together. I love a simple outfit and it doesn't get much easier than jeans & a tshirt.

Not only do they always wear something from their range, their knack for making so many contrasting items look like they're a match made in heaven has pretty much become the foundation of their trademark personal style.

The inspiration for this post came at first from spotting Heidi Middleton in the above green Sass & Bide humble beginnings pants and contrasting blouse and jacket. What to wear to the office

So today I decided it was time to get over my self-conscious fear of sharing my own personal outfits online. After years of blogging and writing about other people’s looks, I thought it was about time to share just a little of my own personal style.

I’ve held back until now due to silly insecurities that so many of us have about our body image. I decided however, that it was time to push my paranoia aside, and embrace the fact that even though I’m no super model, fashion is one of my creative outlets and I really want to share it on a more personal level.

So here I go down a scary new road for the mylookbook blog. I’ve decided to start with a series of ‘what to wear to the office’ posts this week. It’s a style area that I’ve been searching for inspiration for myself recently, and one that’s not as easy as you would think to find. If you have any suggestions or tips of your own, please feel free to share your comments and links!

PS. Yes my second toe looks really strange in the photo above! I wasn't going to post this photo because of it but decided to just get over it!

Outfit details:
This is one of my favourite work ensembles. I'm slowly learning to mix more textures and colours together. Even though I absolutely LOVE an eclectic mix in other people's outfits, I've always tread with caution. Since throwing caution to the wind however, I'm finding so many things that I wouldn't expect to suit, surprisingly do. I'm now consciously trying to combine items that wouldn't necessarily be my first choice and it really does work!

I love how these pants taper in at the bottom and fit comfortably around my waist and hips. At first I was worried that they accentuated my curves too much but decided to just go with it and embrace it. I'm only 5ft tall so it's easy to look stocky. I definitely have to wear heels with these pants though as flats just don't polish the look in the same way. I also didn't think the pants would suit me before trying them on but was pleasantly surprised by how much I ended up liking them. Proof you should always experiment and try a variety of styles on as you'll probably end up surprising yourself!

I really love an outfit that subtly incorporates a current trend. There are people that can get away with outfits that scream "in fashion right this second" however I'm never comfortable with that myself. Although this ensemble is predominately black, the contrasting green blazer gives it the perfect edge that says "I'm not trying to be on trend, this is just my natural style". Absolutely love love love this look, and the fact that you could easily replicate it with any bold coloured jacket and look just as fabulous. Perfection ❤

My Kim Kardashian Style Guide: What I’ve learned from dissecting Kim’s style…

Often referred to as ‘curvy’, it’s most likely that if you were to see Kim in the flesh she would in fact be quite tiny.

Photographs and TV actually do make people look bigger than they really are, and admittedly, it does sometimes make Kim look curvy compared to other miniature Hollywood celebrities. Selfishly this is something I actually love about Kim, having a curvier body shape myself, I love to look at her style and how she manages to always look so incredible while at the same time showing off her healthy 'curves'.

Kim’s style is such a great mix of on trend yet classic combinations. She has perfected dressing for her own body shape and always looks impeccably polished and oh so glamorous. Her outfits always enhance her curves in all the right places and cover the parts she might not want to accentuate. Yes, I've been spending time recently obsessively looking at Kim's outfit combinations and this is what I've learned...

❤ Know what suits you and work your wardrobe around it: She regularly wears slim fitting leggings or jeans, heels, a longer style tshirt, and a tailored jacket. A combination that she’s obviously found works for her body shape, as it always looks amazing. The slim jeans and heels lengthen her legs, the longer shirts always snuggly fit around her hips lengthening her torso and her tailored jackets accentuate her small waist and pull the outfit together.

❤ Embrace your curves... Being confident with your own body is always sexy! Although she is shapely Kim is completely toned and fit looking. She isn’t scared to flaunt her feminine body and always does it with confidence!

❤ Heels really do make a difference...They will give you height, lengthen your legs and always make you look leaner. Kim rarely steps out in flats and when she does it actually does make a difference to her overall silhouette. I think she still looks absolutely fabulous in flats however you can really see the difference it does make.

❤ A fabulous blazer will complete an outfit... Worn over either pants or a dress, a well fitting blazer will polish your outfit. Kim seems to have a blazer in every different colour and a wise investment it is. She’s seen regularly wearing denim jeans but mixes and matches her shirts and blazers to create an assortment of different looks.

❤ Make sure your clothes fit well... If your clothes are proportioned to your body it makes a huge difference especially if you’re short. It will emphasize your best parts and minimize your not so best.

Kim still looks absolutely fabulous however heels do make a difference to your overall silhouette especially in photographs.

Note: Although Kim is referred to as "curvy" in the media and in some photos she does look a little bigger than other Hollywood celebrities, she is believed to weigh between 53 and 56 kg, At apparently 152 cm tall this gives her a perfect BMI of 22.9. Between 20 to 25 is the healthy weight range for young and middle-aged adults. It’s a scary thought as to how thin some of the other ‘thinner’ looking celebs really are.

Hervey Bay

A few weeks ago my family and I were invited by Tourism Queensland to visit Hervey Bay. I’d been to Hervey Bay previously (around 6 years ago) however although the whale watching was an unforgettable experience, unfortunately on that particular trip I didn’t really have time to take a good look around the entire area. When the invitation presented itself to visit again, I was definitely intrigued to discover what else the Bay had to offer and wow, what I surprise I got!

Over our 2 1/2 days in Hervey Bay it dished out surprise after surprise. I can’t believe this area with such an abundance of activities, sensational food and beautiful scenery has been only a few hours drive away from me all this time and I hadn’t taken advantage of it!

So food always plays a pretty significant part in my assessment of any good trip, and my review of Hervey Bay has predominately ended up more of a food story than anything else, so before I go on (and on) about what I ate, I will say that the whale watching was absolutely breathtaking, the general atmosphere of the entire area is friendly and relaxed, but most importantly, the meals we consumed over our weekend would have to be some of the most heavenly delights I’ve treated my taste buds to in a long time. So, if you like to explore culinary delights and have yet to visit Hervey Bay, here’s my guide to treating your taste buds to their own gourmet adventure.

My taste bud tour begins with COAST, and gosh, where do I start! As soon as we stepped through the front doors of COAST we were excited. With a relaxed ambiance perfectly suited to the seaside town of Hervey Bay, there is also a contemporary city feel to the restaurant. I was instantly relaxed the moment I sat down. We were greeted by gorgeous owner Julia who chatted to us about her inspiration behind the restaurant and how she teamed up with award winning chefs Nick and Krista. As we sat and enjoyed pre-dinner drinks, we were quickly overwhelmed by the delicious aroma of the food and couldn’t wait to sit down for our meal!

The menu is based on modern Australian cuisine and focuses on dishes that can be shared which I loved. I personally prefer all my dining experiences to involve tasting a variety of different flavours, luckily my husband Michael and my daughters all have the same attitude toward food so whenever we eat out together we all make sure we taste each other’s meals!

So, the 7 courses of pure exquisite flavour we shared over the next few hours were outstanding. There were 9 people in our group and it was so funny seeing everyone’s expressions of pure bliss, as they tasted each dish. Being with a group of experienced foodies and travel writers, the conversation basically revolved around dissecting the flavours of each mouth-watering meal. The Slow Roasted Lamb Shoulder with relish was one of the favourites among us all, and, I would have to say one of the most divine things I think I’ve ever tasted, that was until I tasted the Pumpkin Cheesecake for desert! We all spent about 3 hours in foodie heaven. Upon leaving Coast Michael and I agreed that even though we live 3 hours away from Hervey Bay, we would definitely drive the distance just to eat out at Coast.

The next treat to our taste buds was at Enzo’s on the Beach. Situated waterside of the Esplanade, the cafe is literally steps away from the water. At Enzo’s you can simply relax and soak up the sun while enjoying sensational food and coffee, or, if you like your holiday with some adventure mixed in, you can hire a kayak, a stand up paddle board, or book a kite surf lesson.

What I oredered: The Grilled Chicken Burger with brie cheese, avocado and salad finished with a garlic aioli... SO GOOD!

Bonus: Every third Sunday night there is an outdoor cinema on the grass right next to the café!

A taste of Italy in Hervey Bay at Villa Cavour...

Next on our Hervey Bay food adventure was Villa Cavour. A Bed & Breakfast with a difference, hosts Mara and Rocco Turina were originally from a small town in Italy however moved to Australia nine years ago, bringing with them their Italian passion for good food, wine and hospitality.

Turning their traditional Queenslander into stylish home style accommodation situated just 50 meters from the Esplanade. Upon request, Rocco who is a gourmet chef with over forty year’s experience offers personalised Italian cooking classes. We not only learned how to make an assortment of pasta, ravioli and gnocchi, afterward we enjoyed a mouth-watering degustation dinner with matching Italian wines. Mara and Rocco had us all feeling like we were actually staying in a villa in Italy enjoying a family get-together.

So on top of Hervey Bay dishing out some of THE most fabulous food ever, we also went whale watching aboard The Tasman Venture. The whales arrived one after one literally meters from our boat. It’s hard to describe the emotion that overwhelms you being so close to such magnificent creatures, I would honestly say it’s one of the most memorable experiences I’ve ever had. Vicki who is one of the hosts on the Tasman Venture has been taking guests whale watching for over 14 years and has a wealth of knowledge to share. I also loved that The Tasman Venture was equipped with under water microphones so that we were able to actually hear the whales singing.

Our last mini adventure for the weekend took place at the Susan River Homestead Resort where were taken on a 2 hour horse ride. It was my first time on a horse and the experience was definitely not what I expected. A little daunting at first, it wasn’t long until I started to relax and get to know my horse. Riding through the Australian bushland on a horse was an unexpected mix of adrenalin and relaxation. The sense of openness and tranquility is quite overpowering as you take in the sounds of the native wildlife and beautiful scenery. The Susan River Homestead is family owned and run with a number of different 'Aussie' activities for you to take part in.

Makeup Trend Alert: Barely There Makeup

This season there’s no arguing that when it comes to makeup looks, it’s all about looking as natural as possible. Healthy looking luminous skin is what you want your stand out feature to be, then, simply add a dust of blush or bronzer to your cheeks, a lashing of mascara and a pretty stain of pink or peach lip colour and your ready to walk out the door – gosh how I love it when things are this simple to achieve!

To be honest, I’ve never felt comfortable wearing thick makeup so seeing photos from International Fashion Weeks with models walking the runways with barely there looking makeup was so refreshing and exciting. I’m always telling my own teenage girls that using makeup isn’t about trying to paint on a brand new face, it’s to subtly highlight your features, to simply enhance what you already have. It’s so nice to be able show them so many gorgeous examples of what I’ve been saying for so long!

So how do you achieve that healthy, dewy complexion using barely any makeup you may ask? It’s all in the technique and a few key products…Here are my 2 favourites...

I have been using this products for years and LOVE it!

I've never liked heavy foundations and before discovering this product I would actually water down my foundation so that it would feel and look lighter.

As the name implies, it only gives 'sheer' coverage so it won't replace a traditional foundation if you do want like thicker coverage. I love it though, especially on weekends when I don't want to look 'made up' but still want something that will even out my skin tone and give a healthy looking glow. It's also so light weight so when you apply it, it literally feels like it's just melting into your skin.

This is my next step if I want that little extra coverage or to conceal a few unwanted blemishes or spots. A foundation, powder, concealer and sunscreen all in one, I love that the feel is weightless and that you can simply layer it to go from a barely there makeup look to heavier coverage if needed - and it will still look really natural!

That fact that it's mineral makeup, natural and preservative free makes it even better. Having only been recently introduced to this product and other jane iredale products I'm now completely addicted and SO impressed with everything I've tried so far. This is one of my favourites though!

For the Spring Issue of Mylookbook photographer Dimitar Krkaliev and his team produced the most beautiful spring beauty photos. I was so excited the minute I saw them as he had so perfectly captured the whimsical essence of Spring we had chatted about and envisioned for the shoot. 21 year old 'Dimi' (as he prefers to be called) is based between the Gold Coast and Brisbane. Currently working as a commercial photographer, he's worked on everything from fashion and beauty, to most recently shooting 9x World Kickboxing Champion Nathan Corbet.

I absolutely LOVE interviewing creative people to find out what inspires them and what's involved in what they do. I took the opportunity to find out more about Dimi and his world of photography...

How old are you?

I'm 21 years old.

Where do you live?

Currently based between Gold Coast / Brisbane.

Did you formally study photography?

I briefly studied photography however I dropped out after 2 terms as Istarted to pick up work!

What have you done (jobs/work experience) so far to this pointing yourcareer?

So far I have shot a few fashion stories along with some label lookbooksand a couple of advertising campaigns.

When did you first become interested in photography?

I had an interest in photography from a very early age but didn't startto pursue it until late high school.

What was your first camera?

My first camera was an old Soviet Union film Rangefinder which wasoriginally my mothers.. still works till this day!

What camera do you use now?

I currently use a Nikon D3x as my main body.

How you would describe your style of photography?

I would say my style is commercial and very clean.. in a way I try toshoot everything as an advertising campaign.

You work in a number of different fields including fashion, lifestyle,food and beauty, do you have a favourite area?

My favourite area would definitely be fashion.. all the prep work thatgoes behind the scenes to get just one shot which looks right is what reallykeeps me interested and motivated to pickup the camera more and more.

How hard has it been to build a career as a commercial photographer?

It's very difficult, there is a lot of talented people out there with agreat eye and competition is always very high. If you're passionate about itthen the difficulty is all part of the fun of trying to stay ahead!

Which photographer’s work are you most inspired by?

Steven Meisel, Ben Hassett, Nigel Parry, Hugh Stewart, Don Flood,Melissa Rodwell & David Mason are all photographers who heavily inspire me.

If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?

85mm prime. Hardly ever leaves my camera and is just perfect for my eye.

How important is Photoshop in your final images?

Post production is just as important as taking the actual image thesedays, photoshop plays a very important part in my work flow.

Can you explain the process of a professional shoot from taking thephotos to the final product we get to see?

It's a long process - Starting with negotiations, creative talks,scouting locations, casting talent, booking make-up artists and stylists tofinally shooting the gig. After that is a lot of editing to get it just rightand have the final image as perfect as possible for the client. I'm very luckyto have a great team I regularly work with who make it all possible!

What has been your most memorable photo shoot and why?

The shoot which is a real highpoint to me is actually one I just shot aday before this interview. I had the pleasure of working with 9x World Champion- Nathan Corbett on a promo shoot for one of his sponsors. I have been a hugefan of his for many years and after watching him on t.v since I was in earlyhigh school it was an absolute trip to be working together.

Isthere anybody or anything you would love to photograph?

Spring 2011 Trend: Vibrant Colour

If you’ve walked into any clothing stores over the past few weeks you’ll know there’s no avoiding the vibrant hues starting to take over the racks. Being one to stick with black 80% of the time, I have to admit, this loud and juicy new colour palette is actually tempting me to step out of my monotone safety zone and throw caution to the wind and experiment with some bold and bright colour.

If you are a colour novice like myself, yet you want to give the trend a try, tread with caution and combine colour with your neutrals as Beyonce’s little sis Solange has so perfectly done. Or, are you ready to jump straight into the deep end? Take inspiration from model Chanel Iman and Designer Lubov Azria in their vivid coloured frocks.

At the very least, the bold colour trend for Spring 2011 will brighten, energise and liven up the atmosphere, so why not get happy add some colour into your wardrobe this season.

One of my absolute favourite styles of dress is the classic shirt dress. I'm always drawn to this style as I find it not only flattering but totally versatile and never really out of style.

I’ve invested in so many shirt dresses over the years as they transition so easily between the seasons, or from day to night. During winter one of my staple outfits is a shirt dress worn with leggings and boots, then, in summer, with strappy sandals for a look that is subtly sexy and effortlessly chic.

Yesterday I was instantly drawn to the image (top) featured on stockholmstreetstyle. Ahhh, whenever I look at photos of Rachel Bilson and her laid back style I feel like any piece of clothing that might be sitting neglected in my wardrobe might still have potential. She has a way of making a simple tshirt, basic pair of shorts or daggy old cardigan look incredible.

The key to Rachel's effortlessly cool style isn't just her signature Ray-Ban Wayfarer sunglasses, it's her ability to balance soft femininity with on trend edginess. She seamlessly blends her designer items with department store basics, always maintaining her girl-next-door simplicity.

Here's a few things I keep in mind when I feel like recreating a bit of an understated yet quirky Rachel look...

There's no need to complicate your looks. Think simple with just one statement piece like a luxe vintage bag or clutch.
Don't be scared to experiment with shorts for ANY occasion.
Put on any basic outfit, be it denim shorts and a white tshirt - then add a blazer. A simple summer dress - add a blazer. It may not work at all, but it might also surprise you. Sometimes the most unexpected combination's are the best.

There are a few people whom which when I see a new photo of, I literally feel heart fluttering excitement. I take my time scanning every single detail of their outfit, analyzing the items that often unexpectedly look magnificent together, trying to deconstruct and understand what makes the ensemble so special. It’s often an outfit so simple yet; this person has turned it into a fashion masterpiece.

Miroslava Duma is one such styling genius. Every single detail from her hair (which changes regularly) to her choice of nail colour always has me in complete awe. Miroslava’s exceptional taste in outfits is always so immaculately sophisticated, subtly on trend yet uniquely quirky, she is the epitome of effortless chic.

Her outfit choices are sometimes a surprise, she wore an all red suit at least a year before any other celebrity did, and, at the time I thought she looked fabulous but it wasn’t a look I would have predicted become a trend. 12 months later and an all red suit is the norm.

A former editor at Harper's Bazaar Russia she now freelances as fashion writer and director. I recently came across a blog where she has photographed her own daily outfits, http://buro247.ru - I don’t understand a single word on the blog however if you scroll through you’ll find a treasure trove of Miroslava outfits that don’t usually show when googling ‘Miroslava Duma Style’ – yes I do that often.

Sometimes it maybe be something so simple you wonder how you didn't think of it yourself, and other times it's unexpectedly daring like this black leather and and delicate lace combination. The top (apparently a dress by Lover from their upcoming Spring/Summer collection 'The White Serpent'), paired with back leather pants and black heels is so simple yet so completely perfect.

I hadn't thought about buying pointy heels for years, now they are at the top of my wish list. I wonder how many people around the world are instantly influenced by what Christine Centenera wears?

So when it comes to red, I’m never surprised to see red lips, red nail polish, red shoes or most recently, red pants (as featured in this month’s Mylookbook magazine), but to be honest, when I first saw the all red suit ensemble on Miroslava Duma in early 2010, I was initially taken aback at the outfit choice, I felt neutral in my like/dislike opinion but didn’t necessarily think it was a look that would be replicated, let alone emerge as a trend.

Just over a year later and Ashley Olsen and Penelope Cruz have both stepped out in red suits. I happened to be watching the morning show a few weeks ago and Lisa Wilkinson was even wearing a red jacket and identical red top underneath.

I’m not convinced that it’s a look I'll be trying myself anytime soon however the three women above have all rocked the look as good as I can image in can get. Any thoughts?

Ministry of sound running trax winter 2011

I'm generally more a fan of walking to get my exercise however I've always loved the 'thought' of running and have been wanting to make an attempt at upgrading my exercise routine for a while now. A friend recently told me about music created especially for running (and keeping your pace even) which I'd previously never heard of. I mean, I knew people ran listening to music however I didn't know there was music made especially for running.

Ministry of Sound Running Trax: Winter 2011 has beats for your warm up to your cool down. Winter weekend movie: Source Code

Anything starring Jake Gyllenhaal is worth watching as far as I'm concerned. Source Code is no exception and with plenty of action, romance and nail biting twists, this movie was a roller coaster ride the entire way through.

Gyllenhaal's character, US Air Force Captain Colter Stevens, wakes up suddenly on train. He soon realises that he is in another mans body, the train is then blown up by a terrorist's bomb, and this is where the story begins.

My husband and I both enjoyed Source Code equally as much as each other, a definite plus if your anything like us and have trouble agreeing on what to see!

Something to love about Mondays - Offspring!

It's been a while since I've been completely obsessed with a TV series and Offspring had me from Episode One. Every single little thing about the show has me completely addicted. So we all know about Rachel Zoe, and because of her reality TV show, the profession of being a ‘stylist’ has now gone from virtual anonymity to the stylists becoming celebrities themselves.

My community wardrobe...

I have teenage daughters, and sometimes luckily, sometimes NOT, we all have very similar taste in clothing. When I say not, it’s only because it's MY wardrobe that now seems to have the ‘community wardrobe’ sign above it, not theirs.

I don’t think the traditional rules of how to appropriately dress for your age have changed recently (I remember regularly raiding my own mum’s wardrobe), but there has become a definitely less distinct line between what clothing is more suited to what age bracket in today’s society.

For me, at 36 I’m certainly not going to be wearing crop tops and skimpy denim shorts, however depending on how you style it, the diversity of clothing you’ll find in stores right now, really can look amazing, whatever age you are.

Luckily for me (and my girls) our “community’ wardrobe was topped up recently thanks to the very generous people at Dotti who have created a range of clothing that not only my girls have been gushing over, but I absolutely love as well!

Hot Pink: Colour trend of the moment

Eye popping bright colours are definitely one of the hottest trends of the moment and during Sydney’s Rosemount Fashion Week, everywhere you turned you would be blasted with bright yellows, greens and blues, the most prominent hue of all, HOT PINK.

Colour trends are fickle though, and there’s nothing worse than spending your hard earned dollars on something that you know you’ll end up hating by the time the season’s over. That’s why I thought I’d cover a few different ways you can enjoy playing with a touch of pink this season, without going tragically overboard or spending a fortune.

Clothing

If your happy head out and purchase an eye popping pink piece for your wardrobe then the most popular look of the season is the hot pink blazer or coat. I lost count of how many I saw during my week in Sydney for RAFW. There were also so many creative combination's in how it was worn, I couldn’t narrow it down to a ‘do’ or ‘don’t’ list. I think experimentation and taking the time to play dress ups are the key to making the look work.

Accessories

If you like to dabble in a current trend or two but like to tread on the more cautious side, adding a pink accessory to your outfit is the easiest way to have fun without risking a fashion disaster. Experiment with a hot pink clutch or perhaps a hot pink bra that might peek out from a knitted or sheer top.

Lips

Make sure the rest of your makeup look is natural and let your lips do the talking. The photo of Camilla Belle (above) is the perfect example of this, fresh faced and glowing, her lips are the main focal point. Use a lip brush to apply your pink lippy for a more natural look and I say skip the lip liner pencil altogether unless you have a perfect match for your lipstick, there’s nothing tackier that an obvious outline, especially when it comes to pink!

One of my friends actually introduced me to this colour. A gorgeous base colour on it's own or you can use it in the inner corners of your eyes or dust over the top of other eye colours for a subtle shimmer. It has a silky soft texture and really good staying power.

I've been a bit old fashioned until now, sticking to the traditional powder blush. I didn't really have an excuse to try anything different until I was given this handy little compact from Kit. You can use either colour on your cheeks or lips to give you a natural flush or a light tint of gloss colour on your lips. I like the fact that you can also experiment blending the two colours together to create your own required tone of colour.

Printed Pants Trend 2011

I am a comfort dresser. If it’s not comfortable, I just don’t wear it no matter how good it looks.

So, in saying that I’ve always a massive fan of slouchy pants (if they have an elastic waist even better). Unflattering you may think... but if the cut is right and they're not overly loose around the bum and thighs, then tapered in nicely toward the bottom of your legs, they can look quite good. Lucky for me this cut of pant has been finding it’s way back into style again.

The most predominate feature about this style of pant right now is the variety of prints. If we’re talking trends, printed pants are IT right now. I fell in love with this look back in July 2010 when there wasn’t a huge variety available. Lucky for me (who is on a tight budget at the moment) you can now find printed pants everywhere. The best thing of all is the assortment of different prints, thus allowing you to enjoy the trend without seeing duplicates of yourself everywhere.

Other than total comfort, the other thing I’m loving about printed pants is the diversity in which you can style them. In summer just throw on a basic singlet and some sandals, for winter let your imagination run wild as there’s a million looks you can experiment with.

Last week while running around and getting organized for fashion week and not intentionally shopping for clothes, as I said I’m on a budget (God I wish this GFC would end soon!) I just happened to walk past Supre and was drawn to these printed pants. Although they’re a light weight cotton and not really winter pants, I figured on really cold days that a pair of tights underneath would fix that problem, and then through summer they would be just perfect as they are. The best part, they were only $38.

So yesterday the weather here on the sunshine coast was ‘coolish’ but still pleasant. I experimented with 2 looks (photo above) in my new pants, both ensembles I felt SO comfortable in. As you can see I'm completely awkward in front of the camera but I really wanted to show how versatile they are, and they don't look too bad even though I'm so short!

So wheather you do your printed pants with slouchy basics, a structured or leather jacket, heels, ankle boots or sandals, as you can see below, from the runway to the street they are a such a fun item of clothing to work with and offer SO many different looks.

I was flattered to be invited to the Michael Lo Sordo show as special guest by iconic nail polish brand Essie. Before the show we went backstage to check out the pre-show model mahem and see what Essie was doing with the nails for the show. I’ve always been a classic ‘french manicure’ girl so seeing Essie’s unique twist on the traditional French manicure was super cool!

They used a pastel combination of Lilacism on the base, tipped with Mint Candy Apple and washed over with Adore-a-Ball. It was a perfect combination for the predominately white collection that flowed down the runway.

The make up done by shu uemura was a clean and polished. The fresh illuminated look was done with a nude pallete with soft touches of blue eye shadow in shu uemura pressed eye shadow matt blue 600. I absolutely loved the soft nude lips created with shu uemura’s rouge unlimited beige 990 matte.

Shakuahachi's "Block Party"collection was a mix of 70's inspired maxis, billowing palazzo pants and structured shift dresses. Other than personally wanting almost every that came down the runway, what I also loved was that it was a collection that would cater for the most diverse array of shapes, ages and sizes. LOVED!

Guanabana's North African inspired spring summer collection opened with the model holding a magnificent albino python and as a traditional snake charmer would charm a snake through rhythm and music everyone was hypnotically silent as each piece of the exotic collection came out. A stunning mix of bohemian allure and relaxed glamour, the 'Casablanca' collection was full of stunning pieces you would wear on their own on relaxed summer days and then simply add jewellery and accessories to merge into the night.

Miss Unkon's spring summer 2011/12 collection titled Girls with Kaleidoscope Minds encompassed all of the whimsical and eclectic elements that fans of the label have come to expect and love. Designer Courney Meyer created a dreamlike setting for the show with dimly lit lighting from huge round globes hanging from the ceiling. The models with their braided Pocahontas style hair and tribal body paint complimented Miss Unkon's signature style of floaty dresses, delicate fabrics and soft pastel colour palettes. Another stunning and no doubt hugely successful collection that will again raise the Miss Unkon profile even higher in the Australian fashion market.

Uscari was the show on day one that really took my breath away. I've been watching designer Krystel Davis evolve as not only a designer but an artist over the past few years and her work just keeps getting better and better.

Her Spring/Summer collection named “Sequence of Light” showcased a mix of crisp whites and buttery cream tones, multiple textures and the most beautiful detail using, fringing, lace and knits. A label that is just SO beautiful and innovative every single season, to me USCARI is one the new(ish) Australian labels to keep a close eye on.

Other glamorous guests to also keep an eye out for will be Jessica Gomes; Terry Biviano; Lisa Wilkinson; Natalie Gruslewski, Holly Brisley; Emma Booth; Gracie Otto and Sandra Sully just to mention a few.

Katy Perry is rumoured to be making an appearance at RAFW. The singer who has just been announced as the new global face of ghd, will arrive in Sydney on May 3 ahead of her performance at the Entertainment Centre the following night.

Pre-RAFW 2011 Interview with Nikita Sernack of Nookie

Years ago when I first launched my online boutique www.australianflavour.com.au (now owned and run by the lovely Sarah Dines), one of the labels I was most excited to see every season was Nookie.

31 year old designer Nikita Sernack is not only one of the nicest girls in the business, she has a talent for creating the most beautiful yet wearable collections every single season.

A Fashion Week show I always look forward to, I was able to have a quick chat with Nikita in the lead up to her showing her sub label 'Nookie Beach' at this years Rosemount Australian Fashion Week (RAFW).

When did you launch Nookie?
The first season went into store for Summer 2004.

How many times have you showed at RAFW now?
This will be the 4th onsite show, the debut for the Nookie Beach line.

How long before RAFW do you start preparing for the actual show?
We start the planning/budgeting/sponsorship side of things fairly early. We always look to maximise the event in terms of collaborations and sponsors and really spend a lot of ‘think tank’ time pushing the boundaries to evolve the concept behind the show and the collection. Then there is a very intensive month long lead up to the show where we are very focused on the range and the details of the show.

Nookie has always been one of my favourite labels as your designs are always such a clever combination of being so beautifully feminine with just the right amount of subtle sexiness. Everything is also on trend yet classic enough to wear season after season, does Nookie reflect your own personal style?
Oh my gosh Krista, that is so sweet thank you! Yes Nookie is definitely an extension of myself and my journey through life. I really design from the heart and the collections are ultimately a representation of what I love in terms of essence and style. I am the ultimate Nookie shopper! I am trying to train myself not to need one of everything in every colourway!

It seems your from quite a creative family with your sister Zoe being behind the jewellery label zoemou. Is there anyone else in your family that is in the creative industry and how has your family influenced you in doing what you do now?
I love collaborating with my sister, the jewelry she has created for this upcoming show is amazing! My whole family is very creative and that has always been a huge influence. Both my father and mother are quite incredible and passionate behind the camera lens, my brother is super creative and also lends his good looks and bod to the odd nookie show or lookbook which is very handy! My grandfather Max actually used to be in the rag trade himself....so it has gone full circle with me.

What is the most stressful part in the preparation for RAFW?
The thing with Fashion Week is everything is smooth sailing and then, BANG, there is like a week to go, you are getting 400 emails a day, there’s castings, fittings, meetings and you have 4 million things to cross of this list....and it is crazy stressful but very adrenalin filled fun at the same time! I think this phenomenon has something to do with the fact that Easter/Anzac Day is always right before Fashion Week in Australia....

Can you describe the collection we’ll be seeing next week? What is the influence and inspiration behind it?
For this years RAFW we are showing the Nookie Beach label. The Nookie Beach Spring Summer 2011/12 is a very effortless and earthy collection representing the ultimate beach girl with a future earth warrior edge. The collection is about creating a synergy between design, fashion with all things natural - nurturing the connection between people and the natural planet and communicating that with new silhouettes and a sense of empowerment. There is a simplistic and minimal ease to the collection emphasising the elements of raw, beach beauty. I am really excited, I think the runway is going to be amazing and I can’t wait to experience all the elements we have going on together.

Do you have any major plans for Nookie & Nookie Beach in the future or are you happy where it is in the Australian fashion market right now?
There are many a plan in action! We are always working on growing Nookie and communicating who the brand is to the national and international market. I am really excited for the launch of the Nookie online store and exploring the world of retail...watch this space!

Finally, what will you be doing once the craziness of RAFW is over to relax?
I am so excited to have a cocktail at the afterparty!! I am seriously counting down the minutes till the tip of that martini glass haha! There may be a little getaway with my boyfriend to Thailand too a little later in May which will surely soothe the stress of RAFW ;)

Celebrity style inspiration: Kylie Minogue

I was reading through Paula Joye’s website www.lifestyled.com.au this morning and came across an article on Kylie Minogue. Paula mentions that she’d forgotten how much she liked looking at photos of Kylie and what she's wearing. It made me realize that I hadn’t stalked Kylie for outfit inspiration in a while either and to be honest I don’t know why!

Kylie has a style that has evolved faultlessly over the years. She is a master of balancing classic style with just the right touch of a current trend. She’s an expert in lightly accessorizing so that the most basic of outfits is transformed into a flawless ensemble, and at 42 she just seems to keep getting better and better at it.

As you get older (and I'm feeling it at 36) it gets harder to find people in your own age group to look to for outfit inspiration. There are are SO many fashion blogs to look at, and I DO love looking at them, however lately I've been feeling like I'm a decade too late to wear most of the things I see.

Thank you Kylie for your endless inspiration, now that your back on my radar I don't feel so lost!

Along with hundreds and thousands of others, I'm completely and utterly obsessed with Rachel Zoe. It's not just her impeccable style (although I can never get enough of that), it's her passion and dedication for doing what she loves.

With no formal training, it was Rachel's zealous eye for putting flawless outfits together for celebrity clients that first caught the attention of the public. Then when we all got a sneak a peek into her own personal life in The Rachel Zoe Project, most of us fell totally in love. On one hand I was shocked by her unconditional dedication and personal sacrifice to please her clients, on the other hand I found her commitment and sheer determination so personally inspiring and motivational.

She's a Cinderella success story, tirelessly pursuing onwards and upwards, believing in herself and her dream to succeed in one of the most competitive industries in the world. Even more inspiring is that she has kept her marriage to child hood sweat heart Rodger Berman happily in tact, now starting a family of their own with new baby Skylar Morrison Berman. Rachel who truly started on the ground floor of her career has without a doubt now reached the penthouse suite. I hope she takes a little time to relax and enjoy the view as she most certainly deserves it.
